Education

Rockwood Water P.U.D. values the importance of water education and offers a number of resources for teachers and students on topics such as water quality, water conservation and the water cycle. For more information on any of the programs and resources listed below or to submit a special request, please call the District office at 503-665-4179 or e-mail education@rwpud.org.

Water Education Mini-Grants Program
Rockwood Water People's Utility District has developed an exciting new program that offers up to $300 to schools in our service area to help fund water-related education. The purpose of the program is to supplement academic instruction by providing financial support for teachers to implement creative classroom projects that will foster greater student awareness of water and its importance. Awards will be granted in amounts up to $300 per project; a maximum of $300 will be awarded per school per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Classroom Presentations
District staff enjoy working with students. We look forward to the opportunity to put together water-related presentations and activities for the classroom as requested by teachers to meet their educational needs. Whether it be about our water source(s), water quality, water conservation, or the water cycle - just let us know what you need!

Performances
The following performances are presented by local actors and sponsored by the District.

  • Where's Rosie?: An interactive puppet show developed to teach students about the water cycle and water conservation; students join Rosie the Water Drop on her adventures through the water cycle (suitable for grades K-3).
  • As the Faucet Turns: An improvisational show whose main message is to encourage water conservation. This highly interactive performance is presented in a game show format where students compete under the guidance of two actors by answering water-related questions(suitable for grades 4-6).
  • Fish Out of Water: An improvisational and entertaining show that teaches students about where we get our water, how to conserve it, why it's precious and how to protect it (suitable for grades 6-8).
  • Activity Booklets

  • Splash!: Includes a variety of coloring pages, word games and number games (suitable for grades K-3).
  • Water Fun for You: Filled with 16 pages of drinking water themed activities - coloring pages, crossword puzzles, and word games (suitable for younger children).
  • Where's Rosie? Activity Booklet: Developed as a supplement for the Where's Rosie puppet show; includes activities on the properties of water, the water cycle and water conservation (suitable for grades K-2).
  • About the Water Cycle:A variety of activities to help students learn about the forms of water, the water cycle and how to protect our water supply (suitable for grades 1-4).
  • The Story of Drinking Water: Kids will learn about the natural water cycle, includng where water is found, how it is treated and how it reaches the public (suitable for grades 4-6).
  • Water Works Map: Developed by the Regional Water Provider's Consortium. The front is a map of Portland Metro area water supply systems; the reverse side includes a word search, water use quiz, water vocabulary, water use information, a story problem for students to complete, a fill-in-the-blanks activity and information on water-related resources (suitable for grades 4-6).

  • Videos and CDs
    The following materials can be incorporated in our classroom presentations or checked out by teachers for their own use.

  • Science Court Water Cycle Video: Through a combination of courtroom drama, animation and humor kids learn about the water cycle, condensation, evaporation, and states of matter (suitable for grades 4-6).
  • Science Court Water Cycle CD-ROM: This informative and interactive CD-ROM gives a presentation on the water cycle, in which students work in groups to determine whether Pip Peterson's pipes are leaking or have condensation (suitable for grades 4-6).

  • Water Education Sites
    Visit these educational sites for more information on water-related topics and resources.

    Regional Water Providers Consortium - A great new website to help everyone, especially kids, learn about how their water works. Just click on Kid's Corner to dive right in and check out the interactive map, cool sound effects, quizzes and other fun activities available to download and complete. What are you waiting for? Get ready, get set, get wet!

    American Water Works Association (AWWA) - A variety of educational links.

    Down the Drain - By collecting data on water usage from people around the world you will be able to see how your water use compares to others and determine what you might do to use less water.

    Educating Young People About Water - Materials available for developing a community-based, youth water education program that targets youth and links key community members in partnerships--all working toward common water education goals.

    U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Water for Kids - Water games and online activities.

    U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Water Science for Schools - Information on many aspects of water, along with pictures, data, maps, and an interactive center where you can give opinions and test your water knowledge.
